It appears that social media is being incorporated into marketing budgets now.  According to an article posted on Mashable.com, it appears that corporations will be increasing their spending on social media marketing in 2009 to 63 percent.  That is huge!

For public relations professionals, this is key to be aware of.  I did a guest lecture this morning for our intro to public relations course here at UT on Social Media and Public Relations, and I told the students that they are living in a very exciting time where social media is changing every day.  Being familiar with the latest technologies and media outlets will allow the PR student and professional to effectively reach their audiences at the same time as being innovative in their campaign.  Plus, one of the reasons why I think social media is great for PR students is that it brings learning outside the classroom.  Students are able to create and manage their reputation online and use the tools and skills they learned in class to their own use.  They are essentially practicing public relations and reputation management everyday.

Hope you all are having a great day!

Best Wishes,

Karen
