I had a chance to talk with Harry Hawk about teaching social media here at the University of Louisville on his podcast this past week. I first started corresponding with Harry after he heard my podcast interview with Kevin Anselmo (for fellow professors, this podcast is a must listen to!) and we shared similar perspectives on how to approach social media in the classroom.

THE PARTY (1)

I had a great time chatting with Harry and podcasts are a great way for professionals, students, and even professors to showcase their brand as well as share stories, perspectives and insights on a particular topic.

I have enjoyed being part of several podcasts over the years, and I have learned some good tips to keep in mind when it comes to being a guest on the podcast. Here are some things to note:

  • Research the podcast host and their audiences: You want to make sure to tailor your approach and insights to their audiences and overall purpose of their podcast.
  • Look at how the podcast is promoted on social media: I try to look at not only what shows they have done previously, but how they present their podcast and engage their audiences online.
  • View the podcast more like a conversation rather than a formal presentation: You really not only have to be prepared for answering questions coherently, but you have to do it in a way that it is insightful yet concise and to the point.
  • Your voice showcases your personality, so use it professionally: Your voice and how you communicate these insights also play a huge part here. Use your ear to listen on how you say things and whether or not you are going at warp speed when you are talking. I have to personally watch this myself when I am talking about a topic I am really passionate and excited about. This takes practice, but it is necessary especially for podcasts.

Overall, I have really enjoyed being part of these podcasts over the years. I love the conversations that arise from talking to professionals like Harry, Kevin, and Melissa. This is what social media is all about – it’s networking and connecting with fellow professionals about related topics we have an invested interest in. I have found social media and being engaged in the community – whether it is in PR, social media, or crisis – to be the leading factor in getting these amazing opportunities. More professors should embrace these opportunities to be part of these podcasts.

Here’s the link to the audio recording and you can catch this episode as well on iTunes as well. I was able to share some of the characteristics and stories from my class with Harry. Thanks again Harry for inviting me to be part of your podcast! I had a great time!

Hope you all are having a great day!

Best Wishes,
