blogs, websites and twittering, oh my!

Happy New Year and Hello to Fabulous 2011! Another year has come and gone, and it is off to the next! 2010 was a great year for me and my family, and I am sure that 2011 will be a great one as well.  With this being my first blog post for the year 2011, I thought that it would be interesting to look back at my blog and how it has transformed over the last five years.

I first started writing my blog back in 2006 right after I finished my eligibility in track and field at USC.  This was also the time where I completed my first year in my Master’s degree and just started working on my thesis.  Amazing when you fast forward five years later – there has been a lot of change!  I am right now finishing up my PhD at Tennessee, and I have since 2006 traveled to some exciting places like South Africa, Brazil, China, Netherlands, and Greece.  Plus, back in 2006 – my family and I started on Jenny Craig and we have had our own adventures together.

One of the things that has been interesting is to see which posts are the most viewed and referenced, and see people from all around the world reading them.  That is very cool!  So, I thought that I would share with you a few posts that I have done that seem to be the most popular on my blog for the last year:

  • South Africa – 10 things to know (May 24, 2007):  This post highlights the top then things that you should do when you are in South Africa.  Based on the three months I spent in Cape Town in 2007 for my PR Internship, these were some of the things I thought would really be activities and places to see to really get a sense of South Africa.  I look back at my time in Cape Town as being one of the lifechanging experiences for me – it was fabulous!
  • PR Quotes:  Putting life, PR discipline, and communication into perspective (January 23, 2009):  This post was written a few years ago to highlight some of the well-known quotes regarding communications and public relations.  Quotes are great to capture the overall meaning and idea of a person, and it is good to use in both research and in teaching.  This is one of my more popular posts regarding public relations. It was even highlighted in BusinessWeek online! 🙂
  • Social Media and Health Crisis Communications Case Study – Swine Flu (April 29, 2009):  I have written several posts about key case studies involving public relations and crisis communications, and the one that I wrote about the swine flu definitely got a lot of attention.  This was something that I was working on with my grant project with the NCFPD, and it was interesting to see this from a social media and crisis communications perspective.  This is one of my popular case study blog posts, along the one that I did about BP, Michael Vick, and Coca-Cola.
  • iPad and Mobile Technology posts in relations to PR and Crisis Communications (2010): I would have to say that to sum up 2010, a lot of my posts focused on social media and PR/Crisis, but also added in the additional factor of mobile communications and devices.  One of these was of course the iPad, which I got mine back in April (LOVE IT!!).  I had written several posts about how to use these devices in PR and Crisis communications, along with how to use them at conferences/presentations.
  • Mobile Apps & PR (December 10, 2010):  This post was written just a few weeks ago, and it is definitely one that has been looked at a lot.  QR Codes and understanding mobile applications are definitely something public relations professionals need to be aware of.  In addition, these can be used strategically to help manage your online and offline reputation.

So, these were just a few posts I had on my blog that were popular for 2010.  It is going to be interesting to see what people will be looking at in 2011 – but I am excited about it!  Hope you have a wonderful New Years Day and here is to a fabulous and wonderful 2011!

Best Wishes,

Karen
