Social media is not only a way to network with other people, but it is an opportunity to share your resume with other professionals, future employers, and fellow students.  There are many ways to create what is now being referred as a social media resume.

What is great about SMRs is the fact that not only are you presenting traditional information about your accomplishments and work experience, but you are able to share examples of your skills and projects.  People can provide links to web sites that they designed, make PDFs of brochures and posters designed, CVs, or provide links to their research papers and presentations.

Not only can you post documents that you have created for work, but you can provide more information about your international travels on thse social media resumes.  If people can see pictures of you at work, or presenting at a research conference— it gives them an insight of what you do and who you are as a student, scholar, and professional.

Of course, like a traditional resume, you have to make sure that it showcases your own personal brand and who you are as a person, PR professional, student, or faculty member.  This can range from the actual design of the page to the pictures that you post online.  For example, I use the same picture for my web site, blog, Twitter, and Facebook account.  The key is to be consistent with how you present yourself online and offline as well. 🙂

Having a social media resume has many benefits to both professionals, students, and faculty in public relations. First, it is an easy way to update your information and maintain your online reputation.  Adding information and documents is very quick with the latest web-based software programs.  Also, it is a way for people to learn about how to use new design software to create their own web site, blog, and other social media template. 🙂 It’s a lot of fun! 🙂

And last but not least, it is an opportunity to share information to others about yourself and your personal brand in your own words– so in a sense, you are being your own PR person.  A social media resume is a communication tool that gives people a way to express who they are as an individual to the Public Relations community.

Hope all is going well and have a great day!

Best Wishes,
