One of the main publics that public relations professionals have to make sure to communicate effectively would be journalists. These are the individuals that we have to make sure that they have the most up-to-date information and that we have a transparent and open line of communication with.
However, with the dynamic business environment and the strong influence of social media, the journalism profession has been transformed before our very eyes. Journalism and its writers at newspapers were the gatekeepers of information and publicity, and now they have been bypassed by bloggers and others on social media platforms. People are becoming their own media outlets to a point. Now, some of the more established newspapers in the United States are in the news for potentially being shut down like the Boston Globe.
Public relations professionals need to make sure that they are not only aware of what is happening in their industry, but other communication fields as well because it does have a significant impact on what we do for our audiences. This also impacts how we strategically position our messages and generate awareness for our campaigns.
I have a lot of friends that are in journalism from both USC and Tennessee. It is interesting to talk to them about what are the main issues that they are facing in their profession as well as their feelings towards social media. Together, journalists and public relations professionals need to be kept up to speed on what each other is doing and work together to make sure that we are all on the same page. These are just a few of my thoughts. 🙂
Hope you all are having a great day. 🙂
Best Wishes,
Karen
