Information is indeed power – if you know where to go for the most current and inside view of what is going on in PR or social media – you will be king (or queen) in your profession or discipline. There are some professionals and sites where they share what they have done, but not entirely – wheras there are others that are transparent and open with information. Not only that, they are incorporating this socially and strategically through social media. What these particular sites have found is the fact that consumers have evolved into what others in the field have classified as being social consumers – we are actively searching for information, and then sharing it with others online. It is a very interesting phenomenon to witness, and something that we all have to consider in public relations. Our goal is to continue to evolve and grow as a profession and field, and the way to do that is be generous and actively sharing our knowledge, expertise, and information with others.
When it comes to social media resources, there are certainly some that are definitely must-go-to places where you can go for the latest on what is going on with public relations and social media. There are certainly many on the list, but here are some that I found very useful and helpful both in my research as well as for teaching in public relations:
Weber Shandwick: The PR firm powerhouse is one of the largest global PR firms in the world, but Weber Shandwick has done extensive amount of research in reputation management as well as in digital media. Their studies on online reputation management, civility in America, and CEO reputation and social studies are exceptional – very practical and applicable for all businesses and industries. Great resource to look at what is going on in the field and how specific technologies can be applied strategically.
Edelman: Edelman has many wonderful resources available for public relations professionals and academics for research studies and documents to incorporate into the classroom. The Edelman Trust Barometer, Good Purpose, Health Engagement, and others are just a few studies and reports available to review and use for reading assignments for the classroom. For research, it is good to look at what are some of the trends and issues emerging in the public relations practice. By understanding these trends or issues, researchers can strategically incorporate these findings into their research. This bridges the application and theory aspects of public relations nicely.
Ragan Communications: Ragan Communications has many great features including a daily newsletter called PR Daily (great newsletter highlighting some of the more popular posts and news stories focused on public relations and social media). There are many articles and videos on the site as well to look at and use in the classroom. Great overall site that incorporates podcasts, videos, blogs, and articles.
Mashable: Great and fabulous social media blog – definitely one to follow to get the most up-to-date information about new technology. Great for PR, marketing, journalism, and advertising students and professionals!
Social Media Today: This isa great website to look at key issues and trends in social media, and how they are applied to various disciplines and professions.
These are just a few fabulous sites that I follow for my research and teaching. These sites really share their expertise and insights from research from the community – which is very helpful and beneficial for professors, practitioners, and students. I hope that these sites help you all with your own research, practices in public relations, or teaching! 🙂 Have a wonderful day!
Best Wishes,
Karen
