Happy New Year’s Eve! It is the last day of 2010, and we are beginning a new decade with 2011 tomorrow.  How exciting!  2010 for the Freberg family was indeed a good one – we had a lot of interesting experiences, trips, and stories from the year. It was a year filled with change, traveling, and learning new things.  2011 is indeed going to be a year of change for my family – graduations, moving, and being in new places.

With every new year, there is of course the tradition of making New Year’s Resolutions – and you can do this via social media as well now!  How fabulous! 🙂  I usually have the same ones each year, but this year I have added a few more that I thought would be relevant to what I am doing in PR for both research and practice.   Here are some that I thought of for myself for the upcoming year:

  • Continue to do a little bit of work each day:  Taking the same mentality that I had as a track athlete and applying it to school and research has helped me out tremendously!  Plus, it has been a very good approach to do for working on my dissertation, which is becoming the size of a book! 🙂  My dissertation is not the only thing that I work on a little bit each day – this goes with a lot of things from teaching to managing my online reputation.  All of these things take a little bit of work and time each day to manage, but it is very important to make sure to do so.  For 2011, I will continue to make sure that I take some time each day to work on these things that will benefit my teaching, research, consultating, and overall reputation.
  • View each day as a gift and cherish each moment you have with those you love: We do not know how long we are on this Earth, so we have to take every opportunity to make each day count for us.  Whether it is exploring a new place to learn about or learn a new skill – to making sure that the time you spend with loved ones is quality.  With the thanks of social media sites like Facebook and video chatting sessions like Skype, I am able to do this with my family when I am in Tennessee.
  • Strive to continue being a student for life: Learning does not stop in the classroom – it is just the beginning!  There are so many things to learn and see in the world, and it is a time to grow as a person as well as a researcher / professional.  This past year – I got the chance to learn Portuguese for my trip to Rio.  This was the first time that I went to South America, and it was a wonderful experience.  I am not sure that 2011 has in store for me, but I am looking forward to the adventure!
  • Continue to be generous with information, insights, and advice: You can learn something from anyone – I fully believe in that sharing information and knowledge to others will benefit everyone involved. We can all grow as professionals and researchers if we share what we found in our own research or provide a list of resources we might think would be beneficial to others.  Gatekeepers of information is soooo 20th century – 2011 and beyond is all about collaboration and sharing.   For the upcoming year, I will continue to share my reading lists of interesting posts and articles about Social media and Public Relations as well as provide links, posts, articles, and resources on my blog and FB page you all might be interested in.
  • Continue to be physically active and on Jenny Craig: 2011 will mark five years of being on Jenny Craig (WOW!) and it has been one of the best things that I have done to lose weight.  In a family of foodies and having some of Dad’s amazing dishes – we need to make sure that we watch what we eat!   This also includes exercising on a regular basis – so I will continue to be one with the kickboxing and cycling classes at Tennessee!

Overall, I believe that 2011 will be a wonderful and fabulous year for the Freberg family.  It will be a year of change, growth, and many happy times together. Kristin and I will both be graduating this year with our respective degrees (Kristin with her second Master’s and me with my PhD).  We will also be moving to our respective positions to teach – which is going to be exciting! It is going to take some time to get used to being called Dr. Freberg (which is my Mom in BioPsych), so I will settle for “Dr. Freberg 2.0” :).  Mom, Dad, and Karla will continue doing fabulous things in SLO with textbooks, conferences, and traveling – so I believe that 2011 will be a great one. 🙂

So, in my last blog post for 2010 – celebrate the new year with those that you care about and be safe!  I wish you all a very joyful, wonderful, and safe New Year’s – let’s celebrate an end of a great year we had in 2010 and here is to a fabulous 2011!

Happy New Year / Nouvelle année heureuse / Feliz Año Nuevo! / Καλή χρονιά / Gelukkig Nieuwjaar / 새해 복 많이 받으세요 / and 新年好!

Best Wishes,

Karen
