Public relations professionals are all about trying to distinguish not only themselves, but also branch out and share their stories to their professional and personal communities. But – what if you had an app where you could broadcast your story to the rest of the world about who you were in just a few minutes?  Well, as they Apple commercials always say, there is an app for that!

First, I have to thank Robert French for sharing this article from Fast Company about the new app ptch with me on Facebook – he is always on top of the latest trends and applications for PR and a wonderful resource and member of the PR community – thanks Robert!

The new app is called ptch, and it has been backed by Dreamworks with the overall goal to change how people think about sharing information and content in a visual way.  Individuals with the app can share images and videos of their experiences as well as edit the photos and add music to the clips to share with others across multiple platforms.  Fascinating!

What is so great about ptch?  First,it is the one app that combines all aspects of social media together in a single location where you are able so share your videos to your followers on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Instagram, Tumblr, and Viddy. The only platform I think that is missing from this group would be Pinterst, which is surprising to me. Second, the new app is really revolutionizing what it means to be social media by defining this new way of sharing and creating content as “living media.” This makes sense since these videos are based on real-time interactions and stories from others and their experiences they wish to share with others.

So, how can PR professionals use ptch for their clients and even for themselves?  Well, this app does allow people to share their stories in a new and unique way across multiple platforms.  The key is to look at the visual content you are sharing and make sure you are transparent yet authentic and not too edited / commercial looking.  This is also a good platform for PR professionals (especially those entering the job market) to do something creative with the app by uploading a short video resume of themselves showcasing their expertise in the area and their experiences in PR.

In addition, for crisis communicators in particular, this is a new app we need to be aware of in case people are uploading and creating their own stores about a particular situation or crisis.  This is also an app that does allow people to broadcast this video and visual information not only to just one platform, but many – so we have to keep this in mind when we are looking at the power and scope of the viral capacity this app does allow people to have when sharing their digital stories.

In summary, I think this is an interesting app for PR professionals and students to be aware of. There are many possibilities here for distinguishing themselves with others in terms of sharing their stories in a new visual format.  Also, we have to look at the potential challenges this may raise for crisis communication professionals as well.  What we have to do is look at these emerging trends, see what are the main opportunities and challenge, and formulate strategies / educational training accordingly.

Hope you all are having a great day.

Best Wishes,

Karen
