One of the great things I really love about social media is the fact I have gotten the chance to meet some amazing people and professionals across these various platforms. One of these people is Melissa Agnes, one of the leading social media and crisis communication professionalsI know who are in the business.

We first connected on Twitter and started chatting about social media and crisis communications, which lead to connections on Facebook and LinkedIn as well as on The Crisis Show. Melissa has also come to speak to my social media class via Skype and we have set up regular “virtual coffee chats” on Skype. We also have the same fondness towards the word “fabulous” as well! 🙂

Even though we have never met in person (which I hope to do so when AEJMC 2014 is going to be in Montreal, where Melissa lives), I consider her one of the most fabulous professionals and people I know in the profession.

I had the wonderful opportunity to talk with Melissa the other day about Google Glass and what it means to crisis communicators. If you want to see the great post and the video of our talk, make sure to check out Melissa’s blog post. She really did a great job in highlighting what we talked about as well as recording our Skype conversation for you all to look at. Very fab!

We discussed a whole range of topics ranging from security, disaster relief, press conferences, and even how this would impact first responders. Whenever you are looking at emerging technologies – whether it is social media or wearable technologies such as Glass – you have to consider both the positives and the negatives that can arise in any given situation. Brands and organizations have to be proactive in monitoring these trends and envisioning how this tool could potentially be used proactively as well as negatively as well.

I really enjoyed the discussion I had with Melissa. She asked some very insightful questions and pointed out some clear issues that need to be discussed in the crisis community as a whole – both among researchers and practitioners in the area. This is still a new tool that is still being tested out by the Google Glass Explorers, but the more people we have to have this dialogue and discuss these issues – the better.

Special thanks to Melissa for the opportunity to talk about Google Glass. 🙂 It was an absolutely fabulous experience! Hope you all are having a great day!

Best Wishes,

Karen
