Ever since I came to the University of Tennessee, one of the messages that we as doctoral students is that we not only need to be publishing and presenting at research conferences, but also to have real world experience and contribute to the professional field.  Well, I am very happy to announce that I have had my first professional presentation posted online on social media and public relations. 🙂

NCFPD Powerpoint

This past year, I started working on a grant that is looking at social media and crisis communications for the National Center for Food Protection and Defense (NCFPD) with Dr. Palenchar.  According to their web site, the NCFPD focuses on addressing “the vulnerability of the nation’s food system to attack through intentional contamination with biological or chemical agents. NCFPD takes a comprehensive, farm-to-table view of the food system, encompassing all aspects from primary production through transportation and food processing to retail and food service,” (NCFPD Web site, 2009, para. 2).  Here is a podcast with Dr. Palenchar on the implications of social media on crisis communications and risk communications.  During my time on this project and in teaching at the University of Tennessee, I have done several guest lectures on social media and public relations for various classes as well as in my own class.  In fact, I created my first professional PowerPoint presentation for the NCFPD as an instructional tool about how to use social media within public relations as well as during a crisis or risk event.  You can download my presentation on the FoodSHIELD web site along with Dr. Palenchar’s podcast. The presentation is organized as discussing the elements of social media, what are the characteristics of social media, what are the main issues that professionals should know regarding social media (ex. engagement, influencers, and Internet memes), as well as other resources that might be helpful.

I am very excited about working on this grant project as well as contributing to the professionals and fellow students that are studying crisis communications and social media.

Hope you all are having a great day. 🙂

Best Wishes,

Karen
