I have had my iPad now for about two months, and I have to say that I really do not know how I lived without one!  It is absolutely fabulous – it does basically everything that a laptop can do, but there are other ways that you can use it as well.  Here are some of my reflections over the last couple of months with my iPad, and what I have used mine for:

Connecting at conferences and seminars: During the last month, I have been going to several conferences to present my research papers or discuss current issues in crisis and risk communications at seminars.  The iPad allowed me not only to take notes on the speakers, but it also allowed me to connect with others online through Tweetdeck and Facebook.  Networking is a huge aspect that young professionals have to be aware of today, and it is important to share your insights and perspectives with the online community.

Conducting presentations:  By using Keynote, I was able to create a presentation and write down notes to remind myself on my key points in regards to social media and crisis communications.  I was able to do this when I was part of the crisis communications panel at the IMC Weekend at West Virginia University a few weeks ago.  It really helped me keep organized and focused on what I was going to be discussing.

Enhancing your reputation as a scholar and professional in social media:  One of the things that we as public relations professionals need to be aware of is how not only how our clients are perceived, but we also have an image to maintain as well.  We have to be up-to-date on the latest trends and products – and if you are doing work and are trying to establish yourself in the social media realm, this is definitely key!  The iPad has become the symbol of the professionals and academics who are ahead of the game.  Technology is definitely an investment – but you have to have the right tools to be as productive in both practice and in research.  To understand the technology – you have to live it, so it is important to make sure that you spend the time and resources on technology like the iPad so you can see what it is all about and be strategic and creative in proposing new strategies / research ideas on how to use it in Public Relations.

So far, I have really enjoyed my iPad – it is a great investment for your future in terms of research, practice, as well as your reputation as a social media scholar and practitioner. 🙂  Hope you all are having a great day!

Best Wishes,

Karen
