It is not only important know to have the right skill sets to be a professional, innovative, and strategic public relations professional – but it is also all about being an expert in networking. Barbara Gibson wrote an excellent post on her blog describing how networking for business communicators and other professionals in the communication field (ex. public relations) is more than just one single event – but more of a lifestyle. Ms. Gibson also linked a great power networking flyer as well on her blog – check it out.
I completely agree – I think that it is important to connect and reach out to other professionals working in the same professional and academic field. From meeting each other at conferences to even connecting through social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter – it is all good! You just never know when you may need their assistance down the road.
The point of course is that you have to also be aware that at the same time, you are managing your own personal brand and reputation. You want to be known as the go-to person in a specific area because of your expertise and experience. Plus, you also want to be known as a “provider” – which is actually a psychology personality type (I should know this because my Mom is a psychologist and we have taken many personality tests! 🙂 ).
In other words, help others and build your own personal brand capital – this definitely contributes to networking and future opportunities down the road. 🙂
Hope you all are having a great day! 🙂
Best Wishes,
Karen
