It is always interesting talking to my friends, family, and fellow public relations professionals about the advances of the Internet and social media. From establishing social relationships to bridging out to social commerce and social reputation management online – it is constantly changing!  But that is one thing that is exciting about working in public relations – not only are we able to be strategic and creative with our campaigns, but we have to also be lifelong learners when it comes to the latest forms of technology.

According to an excellent blog post by Jeremiah Owyang (Forrester Research), there were five eras of the social web that can be classified as the following:

  • Era of Social Relationships: People connect to others and share
  • Era of Social Functionality: Social networks become like operating system
  • Era of Social Colonization: Every experience can now be social
  • Era of Social Context: Personalized and accurate content
  • Era of Social Commerce: Communities define future products and services

However, one of the topics that everyone seems to be bringing up is what is going to happen to certain types of social media – like blogs for example? Steve Rubel of Edelman wrote an interesting article that appeared on Mashable on where he believes blogs will end up in the future.  Rubel states that blogs will either evolve into a more complex platform for professionals to use, or become extinct. If you want to see a more complex way to look at it – here is a link to a map that shows the different ways that blogging can go in the future.

I am a big fan of blogs – it allows people to comment and sure their opinions about issues that are relevant and interesting to them.  I have thoroughly enjoyed having my blog to comment on various issues from crises that are happening in public relations to teaching to cooking with my family just to name a few!  The Internet will continue to evolve, but I believe that it will be here for the long run.

Hope you all are having a great day!

Best Wishes,

Karen
