Life as a PhD Candidate is a busy yet fabulous one! Finalizing my dissertation and preparing for my defense (set the date today with my committee!), teaching, working on various projects, and of course attending and presenting at conferences.  My May schedule is already filled with some great research and professional conferences, and I will be heading to another conference this upcoming week.  I am scheduled to present at the 14th Annual International Public Relations Research Conference (IPRRC) in Miami, FL

Here I am presenting at IPRRC back in 2008

I will forever have fond memories of this conference for many reasons.  It was the first conference outside of Tennessee that I went to during my first year in the PhD program at the University of Tennessee.  I was presenting my work-in-progress research study looking at perceptions of sports celebrity endorsers and doing a study comparing athletes with good reputations and comparing them with those that did not have a good reputation.  Now, if I did this study today – I would have to find new athletes since the ones that I picked have all had their own crises!

What I really liked about being part of this conference is the roundtable format where researchers, students, and practitioners can get together and discuss research and implications specifically towards the public relations discipline and profession.  Everyone is coming in from various perspectives and experiences – which makes it exciting and fabulous!

This year, I am presenting a paper along with my advisor at Tennessee, Dr. Palenchar, looking at Social media and mobile technologies in risk and crisis communications.  It was a very interesting study to be a part of and review the literature involving social media, mobile devices, and what are the uses and practices incorporating emerging technologies into risk and crisis situations.  I am excited about the presentation and talking about research with fellow researchers and students in PR!

Hope you all are having a wonderful day!

Best Wishes,

Karen
