The AEJMC Public Relations Division (PRD) wanted to be very active during the AEJMC 2012 conference.  The social media committee were looking at the implications of launching two new platforms for social media during the conference.

You know you like social media when you have a Twitter shirt 😀

We wanted to make sure we were using social media platforms that were familiar to not only our conference attendees, but also those who were following the PRD on the other traditional social media platforms.

So, what platforms did we decide to use?  We went with Pinterest and Storify.  There were some characteristics and strategies we wanted to implement not only during the conference, but continue to work on as time went on.  Pinterest is a great visual bookmarking site that has been generating huge website traffic for businesses and Storify is one platform many PR professionals are using for storytelling purposes.

 Pinterest:

  • Determine the contributors:  At first, we only have a few people active on Pinterest, but for each interest board (ex. crisis comm, health comm, etc), we want to have professionals who have expertise in these areas to help contribute to the Pinterest account with pictures, videos, and other useful tools for PR professionals in classes and research.
  • Naming the boards:  With Pinterest, you have to have certain boards you feel would be useful for your audiences to follow and feel it is a credible resource for them.  We several boards up so far, but we have PR & Social Media Infographics, PR & Teaching, About AEJMC PRD, PR Textbooks, and PR Graduate Students.  We are definitely interested in what you all think and if you have any suggestions! 🙂
  • Engage Graduate Students:  One thing I saw at the conference was the fact there were many graduate students who were researching social media practices within PR.  What about having them help contribute to the board and count as being part of their service for the PR Division?  We just announced our new team member for the PRD Social Media Team, Geah Pressgrove.  Geah will be helping out with the graduate student chats, content, and announcements/tips for students in AEJMC PRD.

Storify

  • Mixture of pictures and updates:  This is a great platform for sharing information in multiple formats, and the purpose is to tell a story.  Pictures from Instagram, Twitter, and Flickr are very important to have along with updates from Facebook and Twitter.
  • Curating Storify on main social media pages:  We made sure we had each Storify for the conference (three for each day) shared and announced on the AEJMC PRD FB page as well as on Twitterwith the appropriate hashtags.  We wanted to make sure we were reaching all audiences on both sites.
  • Acknowledgement for contributors to the content:  There was a mixture of people who were actively engaged with social media during the conference.  Live tweeting, taking pictures during the tour, and sharing updates and thoughts about presentations and posters were key. You want to also make sure that the content was not coming from just one or two people.
  • Think about how many Storify documents you want to have for a conference: Since we had SO much wonderful content by everyone in the PRD, we decided to have separate documents for each day (Day 1 / Day 2 / Day 3) and one for the tour we were able to go on to Edelman Digital in Chicago.

Hope you all are having a great day!

Best Wishes,

Karen
