The AEJMC 2012 Conference was one for the most engaging and fun conferences I have been to. Chicago is a great city – it has been a while since I have been there, but it was a chance for me to explore the Windy City not only for the conference, but also the city. The food was amazing!  I finally got a chance to go to where deep dish pizza was invented (Pizzeria Uno’s) and try out the Chicago popcorn by Garrett Popcorn.  Amazing!

One of the things I think that was pretty cool was the fact that there were so many enlightening presentations at the conference related to social media and public relations.  New methodologies, issues, and trends were discussed by the leading PR professionals in the field.

Our great Social Connector Panel: Dave Remund, me, Chad Mezera, Lisa Fall, Karen Russell, and Barb DeSanto

I presented in a panel on Thursday with some amazing professionals on the topic of social connectors as scholars.  We got a great response from the attendees and we discussed the role leadership, new media, and online education and community play into the role of a social connector in 2012.

Thank you to my fellow panelists for doing an amazing job: Dave Remund (Drake University), Chad Mezera (WVU IMC Program), and Barb DeSanto (Kansas State). Our moderator Karen Russell (Georgia) and respondent Lisa Fall (Tennessee) were also amazing with providing insightful questions and comments based on what we discussed during our panel.

One other duty I had during the conference was being the interim co-chair of the Social Media Committee for the AEJMC PRD.  We were active on Twitter, Facebook, Storify, and launched our Pinterest board for the Division at the conference.  We got great reception and feedback from everyone about the content being shared via social media.

It was wonderful working with Tiffany Gallicano (Oregon) and our newest member of the team, Geah Pressgrove (PR Graduate Student from South Carolina).  Now, I am happy to say I am now an official member of the social media team at AEJMC PRD.  Yay!

Another highlight for me for the conference was meeting people finally in person after connecting with them via Twitter.  Tom Kelleher (Hawaii), Tiffany Gallicano (Oregon), Richard Walters (San Francisco State), and  were just a few I was really excited and chat with in person in Chicago.

I am excited about the upcoming year and hope to see everyone again in 2013 in Washington D.C.!

Best Wishes,

Karen
