I had the wonderful opportunity to present at the 2nd International Crisis and Risk Communication Conference in Orlando, FL.  The conference was held at the University of Central Florida.  I have never been to UCF – so this was my first time – and it was a very large and beautiful campus.

What is great about this conference is the fact that it just focuses on crisis and risk communications.  A lot of times, we attend conferences where there are many one to three sessions just on crisis communications.  This conference has three days where we got to hear presentations not only from academic professionals, but leading corporate and government professionals on a wide range of cases and studies focusing on crisis communications.

The project I presented on behalf of my sister, Major Kristin Graham (USMA – West Point), Kathleen Vidoloff (Oregon Health Authority), and Gina Eosco (Cornell University and AMS) focused on a value model looking at social media monitoring during Hurricane Irene.  We presented our qualitative value model on what characteristics determine what makes a “good” crisis message come across via social media.  Our presentation was well received and everyone was very interested in what we have planned for our future studies.

I have to thank Kristin, Gina, and Kathleen for being part of this project – I could not have done it without them.  Their commitment, hard work, and willingness to share their insights from their different backgrounds (systems engineering, health communications, weather and risk communications) was what made this project successful.  Thank you ladies and I look forward to collaborating on future projects! 🙂

So – if you are researching or practicing risk or crisis communications, I would highly recommend attending and submitting your research to the ICRC Conference.  It was a great conference to network, share ideas, and get insight into what others are doing in the field of crisis and risk communications not only here in the US, but other countries as well.

I would like to thank the organizers of the conference (Nicholson School of Communication) as well as the professors and students from UCF who made everyone at the conference feel welcomed.  Thank you for an amazing conference experience!

Hope you all are having a great day!

Best Wishes,

Karen
