Social media press releases and ads are SO 2008 – we are now off to the next big thing in which allows users to create an even more interactive and virtual experience in being exposed to an advertisement or interacting with virtual elements highlighted in press releases.  The emerging trend in using and integrating  augmented reality technology within the advertising and public relations profession are increasing in use, and some brands are jumping right on board with these new emerging mobile and social technology.

You might want check out this video from Tesco using the augmented reality advertising app Blippar and how it was implemented in the UK.

What this form of technology is doing is allowing companies and users to build on the foundation in which made QR codes so popular to share and download information directly to their mobile devices. One of these new apps that is getting more integrated into mobile advertising campaigns is blippar.  It is free to download from the iTunes store for both iPhones and Android devices.

While advertising ads have been very active with incorporating augmented reality capabilities in their ads (especially in the UK), public relations professionals need to be aware of this technology would be useful to include into press releases.  What about looking at how this can be used in fact sheets and media kits?  Also, as professors – we need to look at our curriculum to see where this type of new technology needs to be discussed in class as well as think about various assignments and projects that would allow students to get practice with this technology.

This technology is still in its early stages of adoption, but I am sure that this will be integrated more so in the near future for PR and advertising campaigns.  The issue whenever it comes to technology is the fact that there will always be early adapters and innovators testing this technology, but there are others that will wait and see if this will take form before investing in this.  For those of you who are good with coding and want to learn more about how to create your own augmented reality documents and images, here is a link you all might want to check out.

Hope you all are having a great day!

Best Wishes,

Karen
