We have noticed recently in the news that many companies and brands are working hard and being very strategic in terms of their marketing and public relations strategies.  Look at what Ford is doing with its new advertising campaign and its dedication to spend time with social media compared to its competitors GM and Chrysler – very interesting.  But how can you exactly see how these companies compare with each other?  In public relations – whether we are representing our client in an agency, or working in-house – we need to know how we are doing compared to our competitors.

We need to be aware of where we stand in the industry and business environment.  Well, there is a way to do this looking at social media.  If you go to the web site Compete – you are able to check how your corporate web site is doing compared to your competitors based on the number of referrals and people visiting your site. Here is the results of the three companies that I used as examples and how they rank in terms of their traffic (according to the Compete site):

So you can see – these three corporations had some changes in terms of their visitors on their web site over the last couple of months.  This is a very useful tool for Public Relations professionals so they are able to see which posts or updates they had placed on their web site or blog – and determine if that was a reason that the traffic increased or decreased.  Also, this is a good way to see where people are coming from in terms of referrals or other URLs.  For a PR professional to be effective in their practices and for their client – they need to know what is going on not only in the business practice, but also online as well.  It is all about thinking two or three steps ahead to be successful. 🙂

Hope you all are having a great day! 🙂

Best Wishes,

Karen
