One of the things I love to do – whether it is brainstorming ideas for research or class or even consulting – is coming up with ideas. This motivates me to identify what are some of the opportunities and solutions we could address for solving a particular question or problem, and once we are able to do this, I feel such accomplishment similar to what I experienced in track. It’s hard to explain, but coming up with ideas is a lot of fun for me and what motivates me to continue to work hard.

With this being said, I was asked a few months ago at the University of Tennessee about what my BIG idea was? This was their “Big Orange. Big Idea” campaign looking at what alumni think about in terms of coming up with an idea in their fields to make it better or propose some ideas that would benefit students, athletics, and even society. Some of the ideas are pretty cool and original – so you may want to check these out.

What was my BIG idea? It was to create a transdiciplinary social media student competition surrounding March Madness where it would give students the chance to work on a project to build team spirit, brand loyalty, as well as work with other members from other disciplines. It would give them work experience in working and planning a campaign, as well as experience showcasing their skills on a national stage.

In many cases, social media is still relatively new – and we have seen other disciplines like PR and Advertising have similar student organized competitions around the nation – so why not have one focused on social media? I think this would be something more universities and programs should embrace and start. Who knows – it may happen sooner than later! 🙂

What do you all think? Let me know and would love to hear your ideas and suggestions on this. Hope you all are having a great day!

Best Wishes,

Karen
