There seems to be emerging companies and trends arising even with the current circumstances with this tough economy. Professionals, students, and businesses are just a few groups who are branching out to marketing themselves via social media. Some are using social media to showcase their personality as well as recruiting professionals via social media, while there are others who are partnering up with new start up companies to get opportunities as well.

Social recruiting seems to be where people are going – they are using social media platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, and Google+ to increase their network and community while establishing themselves as a marketable, professional, and innovative thinker in their industry.  Plus, it is important to see what are the skills necessary for PR professionals in this new business and communication environment.

So, how do you go about maintaining your personal brand via social media and market yourself in the PR field?  There are several guidelines you can consider, and here are just a few:

  • Be protective of your social brand:  Work on it each day, monitor what is being  said about you, and be constantly aware of how you are perceived based on the information presented in these social media platforms.  First impressions are everything. Be mindful of new ways for others to see this information as well, like Social Intelligence.
  • Always be on the look out:  Be aware of what are the current skills, expectations, and criteria being used for new hires and what has become the standard in the field.  The more you can invest in your education and expertise in these new areas, the better.
  • Go to where social media recruiting is hot, but also look at emerging and new opportunities to branch out  as well: LinkedIn seems to be in the news a lot when it comes to recruiting new job applicants via social media, but there are other platforms that can be used as well. Facebook (professional and personal networking / managing personal brand), Twitter (sharing ideas and thoughts with community), WordPress (maintaing your own personal and professional blog) are just a few ideas.  The key is to make sure that all of these platforms are consistent with your personal brand.
  • Recruiting has come off campus to migrate to digital realm:  The tradition of having job fairs and representatives come to campus to interview potential job candidates is still happening in 2011, but most of these interactions have migrated to the digital realm.  These same conversations and exchanges are happening via social media.  What job applicants and others need to be aware of is where to go further – so they need to research and talk with others about this.
In summary, there are many considerations and guidelines to take into consideration – from both the candidate’s perspective to that of the business or organization hiring.  Understanding both of these roles will allow the professional searching for a job more prepared for the current hiring landscape.  PR professionals – both in research and practice – can be successful if they are knowledgeable and strategic about their personal reputation and position by managing their information proactively on social media for recruiters to find.
Hope you all are having a great day!
Best Wishes,
Karen
