One of the growing areas in social media right now is the focus on mobile marketing and mobile applications, and how it can be strategically applied to public relations.  The mobile application industry is growing leaps and bounds, and has been projected as being a $17.5 billion industry by 2012.  That is amazing!

It has been interesting reading and catching up on what are some of the issues and new developments in technology and social media.  Plus. what is really exciting is how public relations is immediately adapting to the growing change in technology and implementing this into their daily practices.  Now, it appears that public relations professionals are using mobile applications to disseminate their press releases.  According to a recent article that appeared on PRWeek, public relations professionals are using mobile applications to send their condensed press releases to journalists and other stakeholders of interest.  These press releases are written in a bullet format, and the pictures that are included in these press releases have to be available online.  Plus, public relations professionals need to be aware of what are the other mobile applications being used, and how they can use them strategically.  For example, in my last blog post, I discussed the current trend of using location-based applications for businesses and public relations professionals – which is a growing trend that we are seeing in the field.  Public relations professionals (and students) need to be aware of these sites and understand how they are used so they can discuss these new sites to their potential clients or future employers.  It is also important to share examples of cases where businesses have done this successfully and unsuccessfully – which I have been doing in my PR Cases class this semester.

In a few weeks, I will be presenting a lecture on mobile marketing for my PR Cases students, and this is one trend that I will be showing them that is currently happening in the field, and what they need to do to be cutting edge and separate themselves from the rest of the crowd.  By exposing students to the new forms of technology and giving them the opportunity to practice writing and disseminating press releases in new formats, they will be better prepared for their first job and be confident that they know what are the current issues and trends in the field.

Hope you all are having a great day!

Best Wishes,

Karen
