The economy is definitely on everyone’s minds these days.  From looking for a position or trying to figure out to separate yourself from the crowd – these are all things that we have to look at presently.  From fellow doctoral students to even my current and former students – this is a subject that everyone is talking about and figuring out what to do next.  But the real question is – how do we distinguish ourselves from the rest of the students, professionals, or researchers out there?  What makes us unique and fabulous?  Well, there are several things that I think you might want to think about, and here are a few tips I would like to share with you:

Let technology be your friend: Technology is not only a great tool to make your life easier – but it also has a certain image to it.  I have definitely noticed this when I got my iPad a few months ago and used it at the Reputation Institute Conference and Association for Psychological Science Convention.  It was a conversation starter – it showed people that you are current, up-to-date, and appreciative of new technology.  In addition, it is a good tool to have during presentations.  I used the iPad during my panel presentation at the IMC Weekend, and it was very cool!

Connect and network online: People are meeting professionals and fellow researchers online – this is the wave of the future and we as young professionals have to be aware of this.  Having a strong presence on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn are definitely key to have presently.  Understanding and being engaged in social media is absolutely necessary in this economy – just make sure that you are managing your reputation proactively and consistently. 🙂

Today, image is everything: Investing not only in technology is key – but it is also important to make sure that your style and presence matches your personality and character.  I have noticed that there are certain things that I feel are a good investment to have on any event or function – ex. business suits, shoes (of course!!) and personal style.

Knowledge is the ultimate investment in 2010 and beyond:  By understanding how the world works, experiencing different cultures, and studying hard about the profession that you are passionate about – this is what is absolutely key for professionals and researchers to recognize today.  Whether it is further education or certain experiences and opportunities in the professional realm – these can range from profession to profession.  However, we do not stop being students once we are finished in the classroom – our education has just begun and it is time to learn as much as we can about what is going on in the world, our profession, and our lives.

These are just a few of my suggestions and thoughts on the subject.  Again, what makes you fabulous on the job market is up to you – decide what personality characteristics best represent you, understand what are your strongest skills you can offer a future employer, and what really makes you unique compare to everyone else.  So… now I have a question to ask you all – what makes you fabulous? 🙂

Hope you all are having a wonderful day!

Best Wishes,

Karen
