Hello from Miami, FL! I am currently at the International Public Relations Research Conference where I will be presenting tomorrow afternoon on a paper focusing on social media and risk and crisis communications with mobile technologies. So far, the conference has been a very interesting and energizing experience.  This conference is set up differently compared to other conferences where you get to either do a poster presentation or a formal research presentation in front of a large group.

The IPRRC Conference is unique in a way in which there are four rotations at a given hour and it is classified by others at the conference somewhat like “speed dating for research.”  Roundtables are set up and there is about 10 minutes given to the presenter (s) to share their research – completed or work in progress – and the rest of the time is dedicated for questions and comments. It is a very interactive experience where people can brainstorm and help out with future research plans.  In addition, it is a great networking opportunity to meet with fellow students and colleagues.  There have been some very interesting presentations on various topics ranging from social media to public relations education as well as looking at special characteristics shared among Fortune 500 companies.  It has been very enlightening for me to listen and hear these presentations – fascinating! 🙂

Tomorrow is the last full day of the IPRRC, and our presentation will be given in the afternoon session.  I am looking forward to hearing everyone’s insights about social media and their ideas on where to go further with best practices for crisis communications.  Will let you all know how it goes!  Hope you all are having a wonderful day.

Best Wishes,

Karen

P.S. My thoughts and prayers go out to those victims and families in Japan with the recent earthquake and tsunami – we have several researchers and professionals from Japan presenting at the IPRRC Conference, and our thoughts go out to them and everyone in Japan.
