I have arrived back from spending two wonderful and fabulous days in New York City at the PRSA Digital Impact Conference.  I had the opportunity to represent the IMC Graduate Online Program at West Virginia University.  The conference overall was a wonderful and amazing experience for me – the presentations were insightful and cutting edge.  After each session, I felt that I was able to take away so much interesting and creative insights regarding not only the latest applications and trends, but also how to strategically apply them.  All of the presentations and sessions I attended were all inspiring and made me excited thinking about all of the possibilities in applying some of these techniques and issues in my research.  I really enjoyed listening to Heidi Sullivan’s (Cision) presentation on influencers, Gloria Huang’s presentation on the emergency management and crisis communication efforts with social media for the American Red Cross, and Ed Schipul’s presentation on the importance of personal brands.

My presentation was on the second day focusing in on how to strategically apply and integrate social media into a crisis communication plan.  It was a wonderful experience to discuss some of the current case studies that we can take away some good points from in terms of integrating social media strategically (CDC and H1N1) compared to other cases that displayed some of the risks and challenges that need to be addressed within the crisis communication plan such as how to take control of your name and Twitter handle (BP Oil Spill), listen and monitor what others are saying about your brand and integrating an internal social media policy among employees (Domino’s and YouTube crisis) and the use of inappropriate behavior and statements in an emotional and tense time (Kenneth Cole and the Twitter update regarding the Egypt protests).

I have to give a huge shout out to the organizers and PRSA for organizing and bringing together an amazing conference – thank you for all of your hard work and dedication in making this event so successful!  In addition, there were many of the same technologies practiced that were being discussed in our sessions within the conference.  The conference had its own hashtag #PRSADIConf as well as having QR Codes with deals and more information.  FABULOUS!  Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my time in NYC and networking and discussing core social media principles and applications with some of the leading practitioners and researchers in the field.  What a wonderful experience!

Hope you all are having a great day!

Best Wishes,

Karen
