There are many ways to distinguish yourself from the rest of the crowd, especially when it comes to creating your resume or CV.  While content, experience, and expertise are still vital in landing a job or position in today’s economy, strategically creating a visual and interactive resume is also important.  Incorporating videos, hyperlinks, and other visuals (presentations, pictures, etc) are just some ways to do this.

All of these items should be on your own digital platform (personal website with your own domain name) along with other links and features tying in to social media (ex. Twitter, Facebook, Quora, etc).

Digital resumes are expected now along with traditional resumes, and more people are jumping on board with this, so the challenge to be unique yet creative is even more demanding than it ever was before.  People are embedding QR codes into videos or creating a video resume just to name a few options in using social media as well to be incorporated into the resume – so, as you can see, the possibilities are endless.

In addition, using information graphics (aka infographics) are also a way to present your information on a resume or CV.  Here is a great step-by-step that you can do in creating a engaging and visual inforgraphic for your resume.

Mashable just published a great post about how to energize your digital resume with a great infographic – a must read for all students and young professionals entering the job market.  Here are some in case you would like some inspiration or ideas on what you can do in terms of presenting your resume or CV in a different light for when you are on the job market.

In summary, there are many ways to distinguish yourself from the rest of the crowd with new digital tools and formats, but the content and experience you have in the particular area or profession still rule.  Investing in your future with traveling to conferences, be active in research and teaching, and still have a consistent role in the profession is key.

Hope you all are having a great day!

Best Wishes,

Karen
