The thing about public relations is that it continues to evolve and change every day based on the demands and expectations of current and future stakeholders.  This has always been the case – but what we are seeing presently in 2011 and beyond is the fact that this pace is getting faster and faster.  The field is changing and evolving each day and adapting to these processes.  So the question that appears among leading professionals and practitioners in the field is:  What is the future for PR?

David Armano had a great post asking and addressing this question on his blog and brought up a great point for PR professionals to consider.  We advocate and encourage everyone in the company to be engaging, interactive, and part of the relationship process – however, as Mr. Armano states in his blog post – where does PR come into play and offer that is unique and specialized?

The key is that PR professionals still have a tremendous amount still to offer for corporations, organizations, and other entities.  We offer another perspective when it comes to looking at an industry from another point of view and we can share this insight with others.  We are trained to adapt and learn from our experiences to become a transdisciplinary professional.  Also, we are skilled in networking and forming relationships with others inside the profession as well as outside.  Lastly, PR professionals will always be life long learners – we continue to educate ourselves and strive to improve our skills and education.  These are the skills that PR professionals have to continue to enhance to still be looked at as a necessary component for the ever-changing business environment in society.

In summary, PR professionals do have the skills and expertise to continue to evolve and adapt to make sure that they still have a significant role in the new business environment.  We have to acknowledge these changes and recognize the power of conversations and engagement – and be aware that the message that we are communicating is in the hands of the messenger – the presence of user-generated content and technology has definitely made this a trend to notice, accept, and participate in for public relations professionals.
