Facebook has become one of the most influential mediums and social networking sites that the world has seen.  Facebook recently announced that it has connected 500 million users around the world.  That is just amazing when you think about it!  Who would have thought that Facebook would become such a phenomenon like it is presently.

To celebrate this momentous occasion, the social networking giant did something to show the impact of their services among users around the world by creating Facebook Stories. This site gives users the opportunity to share their experiences and insights on how they joined the social networking site, and what it has done for them.  These stories are personal, detailed with feelings and emotions, and showcase the positives of what Facebook has brought to their lives.  In addition, you can search through the stories based on theme or location – and it does give you a perspective on how it has been influential for millions of people around the world and connecting them with others.

On a personal note, I will share you all my story on how I got on Facebook.  I remember I first heard of the social networking site back when I was in Florida, and I thought – hmm, this is interesting – but at that time I was only working on my website and email newsletter.  I went to USC, and everyone on the track and field team was on Facebook and asked me why I wasn’t.  Well, I said that I wanted to just have my own website and blog.  It wasn’t until 2008 after my first year at Tennessee I joined Facebook. After I got on, my parents and Kristin got on the social networking site, and we have been on ever since.  I immediately realized what everyone was talking about and what were the benefits of the social networking site.  My Facebook experience has allowed me to connect and stay in contact with friends from overseas in Europe, Asia, South America, and South Africa.

In many ways, Facebook has been the ultimate tool for online reunions for high school friends, college teammates, and for former classmates at universities. Also, it was a way to stay in contact with Kristin when she was serving overseas in Iraq.  We got a chance to talk with her via the chat function and see how she was doing.  It was very cool. 🙂  In addition, it has also been a great tool to make new friends and connections.  I have met people on Facebook first and then immediately met them in person at conferences.  Plus, it has been a great outlet to share and engage in dialogue with my friends – I am actively sharing stories about social media and public relations as well as pictures / blog posts on my conferences, travels, and updates related to my professional work and school.

In summary, Facebook has been integrated to be part of who I am today as a researcher, professor, professional in public relations, and person.  In order to be the most effective and knowledgeable in social media – you have to embrace it in all aspects of your life.

So, what is your story?  How did you get on Facebook?  Would love to hear your thoughts and insights! 🙂 Hope you all are having a wonderful day.

Best Wishes,

Karen
