You know when you are in a very popular and recognized field when there are talks about a show being based on what you do for a living. How accurate or representative the show is to the field is always the question – but I found this interesting since there have been many shows and movies that have showcased public relations professionals in popular culture through various perspectives – mostly focusing on event planning, publicity, or some of the negative stereotypes out there (ex. “spin doctors”).  Some current examples of some of the movies and shows that have tried to portray one of their characters to be a PR professional includes the movie Hancock with Will Smith and Jason Bateman (PR representative for a superhero), Thank you for Smoking (Aaron Eckhart as a PR representative for the tobacco company) and Sex in the City (Samantha Jones aka Kim Cattral).

However, the latest movie and sitcom buzz related to public relations is going to be focused on looking at the world of crisis communications in PR, particularly based on looking at one particular PR professional Judy Smith handled managing the images, reputation, and crisis situations of well-known and high profile individuals.  The show is tentatively being called “In Crisis” – definitely gets the point across to the audience on what this is exactly going to be about.  The creator of the show “Grey’s Anatomy,” Shonda Rhimes is going to be leading the way for this new show on crisis communications, and of course adding the drama twists and turns audiences who watch GA are fully aware of.

I will be interested in seeing how Hollywood and this particular sitcom portrays the world of crisis communications.  It really all depends on which angle you are looking at since there are different considerations to look at and different rules and expectations from the various industries.  The oil industry is different from the fashion industry – so are their crises.  Plus, are they going to be portraying crisis communications in how it is portrayed in the media and presented to the public, or are the producers and executives going to do their background research and meet with crisis communication experts to determine what really happens on the job.  We will have to wait and see what happens. 🙂

Hope you all are having a wonderful day.

Best Wishes,

Karen
