One of the things that professors do in the classroom is give presentations – whether it is by using their own notes or relying on PowerPoint.  I think that it all depends on the type of class – graduate classes usually do not use PowerPoints since it is more like a seminar format, but undergraduate classes still use PowerPoint heavily.  However, with the new technology emerging, there are different ways to present the material to the students, and one of these sites that can be used in giving presentations or lectures is Prezi.

I first found out about the site over the summer during the doctoral seminar at Wayne State.  Each student had to do a presentation on a risk to everyone in the seminar.  A friend of mine who attended the Crisis and Risk Communication Summer Doctoral Seminar, Steph Kent, did her risk communication presentation not on PowerPoint, but on the site Prezi.  It was very well organized and executed – and was very professional.  I remember everyone at the seminar asked Steph on how she did this presentation, and she showed us the site.  Thanks Steph! 🙂

So, I have integrated Prezi into my PR Principles class by using it more as a tool to show what I am expecting in terms of their upcoming assignments.  One Prezi presentation is some guidelines for their group case study presentation (where they work in groups to create a campaign based on a particular case they are assigned.)  The students are presenting on cases that range from promoting tourism in Tennessee (ex. Zorbing) to incorporating social media and mobile applications in athletics, to discussing what would happen if a domestic crisis happened in the city of Knoxville (crisis communications / emergency management).

The second presentation is on their case study written assignment, which they will be looking at a particular case (BP Oil Spill, Tiger Woods, or Facebook and “The Social Network” site) and take one of the principles in the PRSA Code of Ethics to analyze the case.

In summary, Prezi offers professors and students a unique opportunity to present class content, presentations, and using it for assignments in a different format.  It is very user-friendly, and takes presentations to a whole other level.  You can do this either online, or you can download the presentations to your USB drive or computer.  Plus, it sparks the user to implement some creativity into the presentations and is fun to create! 🙂

Hope you all are having a wonderful day!

Best Wishes,

Karen
