There are times where we as PR professionals have to shake our heads and say to whoever we are representing “What were you thinking??!!” I think that is what is going through the minds of the PR people for Democrat New York Governor Eliot Spitzer. Today, Spitzer resigned as governor after it was discovered that he was linked to a federal investigation on a call-girl ring.

There are so many problems and things to note in this serious PR Nightmare for Spitzer. First, it appears that the image that he was presenting to the public was completely opposite to who he was really. Known as being “Mr. Clean” because he was never really involved in anything bad– and everyone now is getting to know him as “Mr. Dirty.” Secondly, it seems like when someone is in trouble or in the news for something really bad, all of their “friends” seem to disappear very quickly. It appears that everyone is jumping the Spitzer bandwagon because they personally do not want to be linked with him. It appears that the only person left standing by him is his wife– I don’t know why she is still with him– but I feel for her and her daughters. They are victims in this situation and are the ones also paying the price for Spitzer’s actions.

Overall, this situation is beyond the state of being just a PR Nightmare– it is more like a PR armageddon for Eliot Spitzer. His political career is over, his reputation is shot down and likely never to be linked to anything positive in the near future, and he has basically brought all of this down on his family too. Spitzer will indeed face the consequences for his actions– and I am personally glad that he is out of office. We do not need someone in a power position to feel like they can get away with anything– we need someone that actually believes in morals and values, which Spitzer definitely lacks.

These are just some of my thoughts on this PR Nightmare. Hope you all are having a great day. 🙂

Best Wishes,

Karen
