I have been working on a PowerPoint presentation for an undergraduate public relations class on managing your reputation online, and this article came up listing some of the worst celebrity guests at hotels. Some of the celebrities that made the list include Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Russel Crowe, and Johnny Depp. Welcome to the age where anyone can post and write about anything online!
All of these individuals are on this list for different reasons, but they are not on for their great behavior! What this article shows is how anyone can post and write about people without having to deal with gatekeepers in the traditional media. What we have to do as public relations professionals is to make sure that we keep up to date on what is being said online by these individuals and organizations. Plus, we have to take the opportunity in creating our own media to tell our side of the story– this is where having a personal web site and blog comes into play.
But most importantly– it really comes down to the character of the person. A great reputation is how you want others to look at you, but you have to be a good person from the start. But sooner or later, people will find out who you really are.
