I think what we are going to see in this new age of emerging technologies is the personalized point of view form of storytelling. We are seeing this of course being utilized here with Google Glass. Of course, there are many opportunities to use Google Glass for businesses, athletics, and even individuals – but there are some stories that are really great to capture and you are able to emerse yourself in the person’s experience from their point. Check out this great Mother’s Day video that was discussed on Mashable on this very topic:

There are of course more stories that are featured on the YouTube page for Google Glass you may want to check out as well. We are seeing a trend of individuals with Glass – Explorers and others – to capture these intimate, personal, and emotional experiences to share with the masses to experience. Yes, there are some stories that were captured that showcased another side of a story and a powerful message as a PSA (International Women’s Day), but there are others that captured momentous occasions like marriage proposals. It’s really about looking at the story, point of view, messages, and emotional triggers and behavior you want to ignite after being exposed to this point of view.

What are some ways businesses, organizations, and even professors can utilize these POVs from Glass to create these emotional stories for others to experience? Here are a few ideas:

  • Consider the occasions that are familiar with others: There are some experiences we all have that we can relate to – whether it is graduation, proposals, getting accepted to college, or finding out you will be a parent or grandparent. Think about what are some experiences people are familiar with and may have experienced – and consider showcasing these.
  • Brainstorm the experiences NOT yet shared from the POV of the individual: There are always different angles to a story, and what better way to consider what are the special views that only a select few have experienced for themselves? Is it walking on the sidelines of the Super Bowl? Or climbing the Great Wall in China? What about showcasing the day in the life of a celebrity getting ready for the Oscars? Making a keynote speech at a TED event? These are all stories that could be captured and tailored for the organization to share with others.
  • All the world’s a stage – your POV stage with Glass: With Glass, you are the medium to communicate the message – your eyes focus on what the audience sees. Your world is the stage that is capturing the attention of the viewers. Consider what catches your attention personally – your initial behaviors and what you focus on says a lot as well as what you are recording and sharing through Glass. I think in many ways, you as a Glass explorer take on the ultimate visual storyteller role since you are in control of the frame, angle, amount of time spent on certain shots, and focus in the Glass story. Consider as a professor what are some stories that are unique from YOUR point of view that would be good to share with others. Consider the possibilities for teaching, service learning, study abroad trips, etc.
  • Evaluate the emotional triggers and your audience: What type of emotions are you trying to instill with the audience? Happiness? Sadness? What is the call to action you want to share that will motivate others to act accordingly? These are some things to consider here.
  • Connecting the content from Glass to the masses: Hosting the content from Glass is not only important, but also considering what are going to be the other platforms you will utilize and house this content to promote it to. Branching out to both social, digital, and traditional media on this is key. Each of these mediums are connected and are key for Glass – it’s all about integration and cross-promotion to share these stories with everyone. It’s also about creating awareness visually of all of the possibilities Glass has to over as a tool to capture these unique stories with others.

We are living in an exciting time and as a Glass Explorer myself, I think that this is going to be the new dimension for strategic communication and public relations professionals with personalized storytelling through wearable technologies. This is going to be one feature where we are going to see more branded content and integration to brand journalism and branded storytelling for PR professionals.

Hope you all are having a great day!

Best Wishes,
Karen
