One of the favorite things I love doing with friends and family is to go to the movies.  We are all big fans of action movies, and the recent movie I went to see today was “The Avengers.”  Great movie, special effects, and overall action and plot.  Had a wonderful time!  Here is the official trailer available from Marvel on their YouTube Channel.

However, what really has intrigued me from a social media and mobile technology perspective is their latest augmented reality app.  This app uses augmented reality technology to create a game like scenario for the user, play games, download Avenger characters to use, and much more.  Here is the video posted on Walmart:

What does this mean for social media and PR professionals?  Apps are becoming more integrated and using different functions and tools for the user to implement.  This particular app from Marvel is both interactive and is targeted to those who are enthusiastic about the characters and comics / movies.  In addition, this taps into the gamification and social interaction functions people are looking for when it comes to products and services.

Overall, Marvel has not only created a fantastic movie for everyone to enjoy, but their strategic insight and creativity with this new augmented reality app is genius.  It is targeting specific age cohorts who are tech savvy and want that gaming and interactive experiences – and have the opportunity to share this with their peer group and others online.  This type of campaign will be setting the standard for others to follow.  First it was Twitter and Facebook, then QR Codes, and now we are seeing augmented reality and gamification take its place in marketing and PR campaigns for 2012.

Hope you all are having a great day.

Best Wishes,

Karen
