In just a few days, I will be attending the AEJMC Annual Conference in Denver, CO. This conference is going to be a little different compared to others that I have gone to this year. I will not be presenting at the AEJMC conference, but instead – I will be participating in the job interview placement service at AEJMC. I will be entering my fourth year in the doctoral program at the University of Tennessee, and my proposed graduation date will be in May 2011. It is amazing how time flies by when you are having a great time! 🙂 This is a wonderful service that AEJMC offers to graduate students who are currently on the job market and looking at positions at universities.
What is also great about AEJMC is that they are not only offering these great services and presentations, but they are really implementing social media strategically for their conference. From creating a very integrated website dedicated specifically for the conference to setting up a Tweet-up among conference presenters and attendees, to setting up a Tumblr site as well for the conference.
Tumblr allows people to blog, post, and share information and pictures to others that are connected to the social media site. What is also neat about Tumblr is that it can also be integrated with Twitter – meaning whatever you post on the site can be shared with followers on Twitter for the organization. This is key in making sure that you are reaching your complete audience online by engaging and sharing information and insights about a particular issue or topic, or in this case what is going on at the conference. In addition, some experts are saying that Tumblr is more conversational than Facebook and Twitter is – and this is a trend that public relations professionals need to be aware of and notice in their practice and research. I do also believe that AEJMC is going to be integrating Foursquare also in their social media practices. So, in other words, AEJMC is being very cutting edge by incorporating this new technology and communication tools into their conference setting. 🙂
