Social media at the Department of Defense (Retrieved from http://www.defense.gov/home/features/2009/0709_socialmedia/)

What has been interesting to see is how social media is being used in not only for businesses and individuals, but also with the government.  One of my students from PR Cases posted a link to the Department of Defense web site and discussed how they are really implementing social media in communicating to their various audiences and are in the process of setting up some guidelines for their different branches for social media.  I was very impressed with the web site – they have definitely organized social media into various platforms and sites and discuss how each one is being used.  From connecting and finding out the latest information on Facebook to discussing what are the key terms associated with Twitter to LinkedIn and YouTube.  Another feature that they have is a section dedicated to articles discussing how the different departments are using social media and options to connect with the Department of Defense on other social media sites.

One thing that I think that the Department of Defense is doing that is effective and strategic is that they are using this new web site on social media as an educational tool.  They are sharing information with their online visitors and other key publics about the various elements of social media.  It is a great opportunity to help others understand what is social media all about, what are some of the key terms that people are using, and how they are using it in their daily activities.  This is creating transparency and willingness to educate and share knowledge about the department to their various audiences.  I have told my students that to be proactive in our campaigns and research in Public Relations, we have to make sure that we also serve as educators to others on what we are doing and be transparent in our messages and actions.  This is an example of how the government is using social media as an effective tool in educating others about the role of social media and how to use it.

I hope that you all are having a great day!

Best Wishes,

Karen
