The last few days have been a complete whirlwind, but I wouldn’t have had it any other way! We just finished our spring semester here at Louisville and finals are done and completed for all of us. So, after taking a break from working on research papers, projects, and grades, I was able to do something pretty cool this past week.

It is that time of year here in Louisville where everyone has one thing on their mind: The Kentucky Derby. It’s basically a two week long celebration full of various events and activities throughout the city. And I got to celebrate and experience some of these events and activities with my sister Kristin!

The first night we spent at Unbridled Eve, one of the premier events in town before the Kentucky Derby. My social media class was very fortunate to have the event as a client this semester. Bella Portaro and her social media team did an amazing job at the event – Kristin and I were extremely impressed not only with the overall presentation of the event, but the overall atmosphere. Plus, the team was well organized and prepared to make sure to use the designated hashtag, have all of the Twitter and Instagram handles ready to go for the celebrities on the red carpet, and share these updates in real time.

Two of my current students in class (Aaron and Amber) were also helped in volunteering for their social media efforts during the event during the live auction. What a great learning experience for them! Thank you again for inviting us to the event and being part of our class this semester, Bella!

Kristin and I spent the first full day at the Kentucky Derby. Yes, that big horse racing event that happens the first Saturday of every May. This was Kristin’s first time not only in Kentucky, but in Louisville. so naturally we had to go and wear big hats, drink mint juleps, and cheer on our horses at the races. Kristin had a great summary of our experience at Kentucky Derby 141 on her blog.

Another thing I wanted to do while Kristin was here in Louisville was to show her two other things Kentucky was known for: Horses and Bourbon. So, how did we accomplish both of these in one day? We took a tour with Mint Juleps Tours (thanks to the recommendation by my former #Freberg14 and #FrebergGrads student Katie McDaniel) and it was amazing! We went to Adena Spring Farms and Buffalo Trace on our tour and it was amazing. We had a great time and our tour experience was phenomenal.

Not only did we get the history of bourbon and background of the horse racing industry, we got a taste of what Kentucky was all about. If you have one day to spend exploring around Kentucky, you should definitely make sure to book a tour with Mint Julep Tours. I highly recommend them!

Overall, Kristin and I had a marvelous time exploring Louisville together. We ate at a lot of the great places around town and I was able to share with her some of my favorite spots.

Hope you all are having a great day!

Best Wishes,
