One of the messages that I remember getting both at Florida and USC was that it was very important for public relations professionals to know about the Internet and how to use it.  We were encouraged to have a web site up and to at least know how to operate a blog.  Here at the University of Tennessee, the message is definitely the same– including other forms of technology that can be used into communication.  From social media to online portfolios and sharing videos – we are encouraged not only to know it, but use it as well.

Our undergraduates get a lot of information on how to do this in their classes as well as the Master’s students. I believe that blogging is so much fun – it is a way to stay current on issues that are important to you and your studies (Public relations, social media, reputation management) while at the same time you get to discuss other interests as well (family, traveling, cooking, and athletics). Plus, it is also a great practice writing tool as well.  This is going to be my third year having my blog, and 14th year having my personal web site.  Wow!

But what about the Ph.D. students?  I have to say, that the my fellow Ph.D. friends are very tech savvy and have some really interesting blogs out there. What is so great about the UT program is that everyone comes from different backgrounds, perspectives, and there is such a range of research and professional interests among all of us!  It is very exciting! Here are some of the blogs by some of my friends here at UT:

Allyson Beutke DeVito (Journalism & Electronic Media)

Bernardo Motta (Journalism & Electronic Media)

Simon Aristeguieta (Information Sciences)

Hannah Shinault (Public Relations)

Lisa Byerley Gary (Lecturer / Communications)

Keep up the great work on your blogs and have a wonderful day! 🙂

Best Wishes,

Karen
