Hello from San Francisco!  It has been an exciting and eventful couple of days at the Associaion for Psychological Science convention in the heart of the lovely city of SF. Even though I am getting a Ph.D. in Public Relations, my research in reputation management and personalities involves a lot of research and literature from the psychology field.  Plus, I was originally a Psychology major in college. 🙂

We drove up to San Francisco on Thursday, and arrived early in the evening.  The first day of the convention was great – we first had to register for the conference at the San Francisco Marriott, and it was then off to the Power Analysis session workshop.  Yes, four hours of statistics and understanding how PA is designed for research studies – it was very interesting and contained useful information for future studies.  I also had the wonderful opportunity to have meet with two distinguished and prestigious scholars in the psychology field over lunch and dinner.  We met with Wray Herbert for lunch at Roy’s (a Hawaiian fusion restaurant – very chic!), who is the Direct of Public Affairs for APS and also has a blog that is syndicated by Newsweek.  It was a pleasure meeting you Wray at lunch – I had a wonderful time! 🙂

After listening to Nancy Kanwisher, the key note speaker at APS who spoke on the specialized brain, we had the pleasure to have a fabulous Greek dinner at Kokkari Estiatorio with John Cacioppo and his daughter Christina.  The evening was unforgettable – we had an amazing dinner (what can I say, we are a family of foodies!)  and the company was fabulous – it was an absolute pleasure. 🙂  We had a range of appetizers from octopus to olives and duck, and Dad and I had to have baklava ice cream (can we say – YUM!!).  If you happen to be in the San Fran area, you have to go to Kokkari!  The food is not only spectacular, but the service that we had was absolutely wonderful, and everyone at the restaurant was very personable and welcoming.  It was indeed one of the most fabulous evenings I have had – great food with amazing company.  Thank you again John for a lovely evening!

I believe that it is important for the future of communication and applied and theoretical disciplines like Public Relations should not only attend and participate in the major conferences for the field, but also branch out to look at what other social sciences are doing in terms of research streams.  There are many opportunities for future research studies and networking – a conference like APS is definitely a wonderful conference.  It is very research-focused, but the interaction that occurs among the researchers and students is great.

What is next?  Well, we will be preseting our poster session tomorrow morning – very exciting!  I will keep you all posted with how it goes, along with pictures of the event.  Should be a lot of fun!

Hope you all are having a great day!

Best Wishes,

Karen
