Presenting at the Reputation Institute Conference

Here I am PRESENTING!!!!

Hello and ‘Ni hao’ everyone!

The day finally came where I got to present my research paper at the Reputation Institute Conference. The paper that I presented focused on the case study and public relations situation involving Yahoo! and the Chinese journalist crisis. This paper was very interesting to research and write.

The day started off with going to a few of the conference presentations. The conference had large sessions with panels of prestigious guest speakers, which were labeled as plenarys, and then there were breakout sessions that were divided by topic. I went to the first plenary session that was directed by Dr. Cees van Reil, and his presentation focused on alignment among employees and how it affects the reputation of a corporation. It was very fascinating.

After this presentation, I got a chance to go and see Dr. Craig Carroll present during his breakout session that focused on Communication and the Media. Dr. Carroll did an excellent job in presenting his research. I also got a chance to hear my advisor and co-author on my research paper, Dr. Palenchar, present his other research paper at the confernce. Dr. Palenchar also did an amazing job in his presentation. I have learned a great deal from both Dr. Carroll and Dr. Palenchar—they are great advisors and mentors. Thank you! J

Later in the afternoon, I began to finalize my presentation and got ready for my own breakout session. The breakout session that I was in was focusing on how to manage reputation in China. There were four speakers that were part of my breakout session, and I was the last to present. I was very excited and I felt that I had to be 100 percent on my game because I was presenting at a very high level conference and my audience was filled with the leaders and experts in the field of reputation management. Plus, my sister Kristin was in the audience and I wanted to make her proud of her little sis! J Overall, my presentation went very well—I got some great feedback and networked with my fellow conference participants.

The Reputation Institute had a dinner and social that was held at Nuargo, which is a Vietnamese restaurant that overlooks the Hou Hai Park and lake. Beijing really lights up at night—everything was busy, people were eating and dancing, and it just seemed to be glowing. The meal that we had was absolutely fantastic—we had everything from meat on sticks to curry to even fish—and when I say fish, I mean the entire fish! It was fried and the head was still attached. I was like, well! This is interesting, but tasty! It was a wonderful meal also to talk with other people from the conference. I would like to thank the Reputation Institute for arranging this wonderful dinner and social—it was amazing!

This conference was overall really amazing, and it was an honor to present my research and to be in China. I look forward to coming back to it in the future. Hope you all are having a great day.

Best Wishes,

Karen 🙂

So, Karen! Your blog was the subject of conversation at the RI breakfast Sunday morning in Beijing. (Apparently it was picked up by the “Google Alert” for ‘Reputation Institute.) Watching your work progress, and simply being associated with you is a source of pride and joy. Having you present your work here for others to see was a highlight of the conference…
