Hello and good afternoon! 🙂

It’s amazing that I have been living in South Africa for nearly three weeks– in many wonderful ways, it seems like I have been here longer!  I am getting to know my way around Cape Town and that makes it fun.

the Headquarters of Total Media in Cape town!

So far, I have been given a lot of opportunities to write and help out at Total Media, which has been great!  I have had the opportunity to write several profiles for our clients as well as some fun press releases.  I have also been given a research challenge or two (which is really neat!)

One of the duties that I am pleased to do is research — to find out which publication has featured our clients.  Today, my searches included reading Afrikaans.  In South Africa, there are many Afrikaans publications, including Die Burger (a newspaper in Cape Town) and Sarie (a fashion magazine in South Africa).  Quite interesting, and it just shows the importance to not only know your public as a PR professional– you have to also know and understand the language.

Reading Afrikaan Media is challenging but fun!

Also, PR professionals not only have to be aware of the language, but they have to know the history, background, culture, and best ways to communicate.  Before I came to SA, I already owned a couple of Afrikaans books and began attempting the language. 🙂  I still have a lot to learn! 🙂  But so far, it’s been quite a stimulating adventure.

Anyway– I hope that all is going well with you and I hope you have a great day!

Best Wishes,

Karen
