It is that time of year where we all put up our Christmas lights, organize plans to make some amazing and fabulous holiday cookies, and prepare for finals. But if you had seen the sports news lately, it seems to be the time for football coaches to be fired. What is up with the timing– it is the holiday season! There have been many coaches that have been let go in the past couple of days, including Nebraska football coach Bill Callahan, Ole Miss football coach Ed Orgeron, and then Texas A&M coach Franchione “stepped down” after they won against Texas.
The reason why Callahan and Orgeron were fired was because of their overall record for wins and losses at their respective university. Franchione stepped down as the head football coach for Texas A&M after it was published that he had been selling his injury list to a set of boosters back in October. Can we say PR Nightmare?
I believe that this happened to these particular universities for several reasons. As we can see, Nebraska and Ole Miss did not have the seasons that they wanted, and their athletic departments want to get a head start into getting their programs back in order. But I guess it is all about the timing that is troubling to me– sure, they just finished their seasons– but it’s the holidays. 🙂 On the other hand, I think that these coaches might want their athletic departments to be honest with them so they can look for other positions at other universities. In terms of Franchione, I think that the sports community knew exactly what was going on, and it seem that this was going to happen sooner or later.
On a happier note, I have to congratulate both my alma maters for their performance this past week. The Trojans beat the Arizona Sun Devils and have a chance to go on to win their sixth Pac-10 Title, and Tennessee beat Kentucky in 4 OTs to go on to the SEC Championship Game next weekend. I think that I will be watching some football next Saturday! Mom and Dad are going to go to the USC-UCLA game– wish I could be there! 🙂
Hope you all are having a great day!
Best Wishes,
Karen 🙂
