Interesting Development: Former sprinter Ben Johnson comments on the Marion Jones Case & Doping in athletics

Looking at the sports news headlines, I came across this article regarding the Marion Jones case and comments made by former sprinter Ben Johnson.  I found this article unique in many ways.
 
First, Johnson makes a statement that it is not only elite athletes like Marion Jones that are using steroids, but others as well. Johnson recently stated in an interview with Al-Jazeera the following:

“I believe that everyone on the international level is using performance-enhancing drugs. And, you know, it’s widespread and it’s going to continue on. A lot more people [are] going to be also coming forward.”

Whoa.  That is a pretty heavy statement to be making! In terms of a PR standpoint, there are many different things that you have to consider.  First, look at the source.  Sure, it is Ben Johnson, the Canadian sprinter that lost his gold medal at the 1988 Olympics because he tested positive for steroids.  But, who better knows the politics and gossip other than those that are familiar with the situation?  I bet Johnson has some very interesting stories that he can probably share to give more light to this statement.  I must say, it is very intriguing.  Plus, you have to look at the news source as well– Al Jazeera??  I wonder how they got this statement from Johnson first.

But Johnson does bring up an interesting point– sure, we can go after these high profile athletes like Jones, Gatlin, and Landis to prove to the world that they took performance enhancing drugs, but looking at the bigger picture– you know that they are not the only ones that are doing this.  In order to address this, you have to also look beyond the athletes at the organizations, coaches, support groups, and peers- they are also involved.   Everyone mentioned seems that they have so much at stake that they are willing to do anything to be good– they would risk their future health and reputation just to have a few moments in the spotlight.

The time has come for athletics to really do something about the issue of performance enhancing drugs among athletes.  From what Johnson said in his interview, if everyone at the international level is doing steroids and they get busted, who will be left competing?   The problem at hand is not just a few athletes– it is the whole industry.  It will be interesting to see how this develops.
