Even though I was only in South Africa for a couple of months, there are some things that I have picked up during my time there.  These are just a few simple things, but it is something my family and friends have picked up on.

Here are just a few things that I thought of sharing with you all :):

Common phrases (shame, pleasure, divine, fab!):  In South Africa, there are a few phrases and expressions that are used that at first, you are like– that is pretty cool!  For example, I mentioned in some of my previous posts the fact that everyone says “fab!” for something that is awesome or excellent, or “divine.”  With divine– you have to say it like “Dahhhhhhhhhhvine!” to get the full effect! 🙂

Also, instead of saying you are welcome, people in South Africa say “pleasure!”  I thought that was kinda cool!  Lastly, if something is not going right, people say “shame!”  Everyone in our group has picked all of these common phrases and I have already used them a bunch of times since I have been back in the States! 🙂

Got Coffee?:  Before going to South Africa, I wasn’t really a coffee drinker.  Mom, Dad, and Kristin were the coffee drinkers in the Freberg Family, but if you give me a Diet Coke, I am good to go!  But when I started my internship at Total Media, everyone had coffee.  So, I started having at least a couple of cups a day! 🙂  It was great because it warmed me up (we had a lot of winter weather in Cape Town).

the wonderful food of South Africa was the biggest surprise to me!

The love for South Africa’s Food & Tomato Sauce:  As a foodie, I have to say that the food in South Africa was just out of this world!!!!  I enjoyed eating in Cape Town and in Joburg very much (Sorry Jenny!)  But I really, really, REALLY liked the tomato sauce in South Africa.  It’s like ketchup, but it is thicker and almost has a hint of salsa in it.  It was SO good!!!  We put it on everything, and it was really excellent on mashed potatoes. 🙂

Getting used to driving on the wrong side of the road:  I have a feeling that I am going to wait a little bit before I start driving again!  Just before I left Cape Town, I totally got used to driving on the left side of the road– whoa! 🙂

A great insight into PR at an agency:  What I have really enjoyed about my overall experience at Total Media is the fact that I got a chance to work on various accounts and do many tasks in the process.  From researching to doing PR proposals– I got a look into what PR agencies do for their clients.  Also, I got to work on various accounts as well– from Fashion (CTFW, Gavin Rajah, and Craig Port) to Consumer clients (Amarula, Virgin Active, and Galaxy)– it was really rewarding. 🙂

Hope all is going well & have a great day!

Best Wishes,

Karen
