It has been a pretty busy week for my #Freberg13 class. We have gone over a lot of different topics related to social media ranging from privacy, ethics, and strategic planning. It was also a time where I was able to have my Mom (aka Dr. Freberg 1.0) come for a visit to Louisville as well! Not only did Mom get a chance to go see a UofL Football game and see horses race at Churchill Downs, but she was also able to see me teach at UofL. It was great to have Mom in the classroom and show her my classes and what my life is like in Louisville. ๐Ÿ™‚

My students all wrote about a variety of different perspectives when it came to social media this week – actually, this was one of the more popular topics the students discussed on their blogs this week. Ashley discussed her points of view when it comes to privacy on social media in her post by focusing on evolving with the changes in technology and social media. Rachel discussed what are some of the risks of privacy issues on social media on her post but also discussed whether or not we really do have it on social media as well. Alena discussed her experience when she Googled her name and her thoughts about cyberbullying (which we also talked in class this week as well).

Elizabeth also highlighted the components her peers and others need to be aware of when it comes to privacy on social media in her post – she shared some good lessons and tips for others to note about this subject. Devin highlighted the importance of understanding that we all have a digital footprint when it comes to social media, so we have to be aware of this every time we have a conversation, post, and update on social media. Maggie shared her own personal experience and discussed the importance of having a positive online reputation this week as well.

Jenniferย and Maggie both discussed in their posts the importance of strategy when it comes to social media practices while Amanda presented a detailed post discussing the components necessary for a strategic social media plan. Ben not only shared his insights on what makes an effective social media plan, but also discussed the various jobs that are out there when it comes to social media professionals that may be of interest to his fellow classmates. James also discussed social media strategy and planning and also was able to tie this into what he is doing at his work for a fashion label, which was a good way to incorporate what we are discussing in class so far.

It was also interesting to see the posts the students wrote for their personal posts. For my blogging assignment, I require two posts per week – one is dedicated to the class and the other one is up to the student. Justin wrote about what happened this past week in football on his blog and Jennifer discussed what it was like to work for Red Bull in her post for the week. I did approve that Sieanna wrote a post about coffee (:D) – it is definitely a major food group in my opinion! Maggie wrote about her love for Disney and Diana wrote about crisis communications and Miley Cyrus.

Overall, I have been very pleased with the work my students have done this semester with their blogs and social media activities. They are engaged, helping each other out online, and really creating a dynamic learning environment both in and outside the classroom. This was one of the things I wanted to try to do with the class this semester, and we have many more weeks left! ๐Ÿ™‚ In case you want to get more of the highlights from class this week, you can check out the Storify I created for the week or follow the class hashtag #Freberg13 on Twitter.

Hope you all are having a great day!

Best Wishes,

Karen
