The USC Trojans made a strong showing in the NACAC under-23 track and field championships held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, this weekend. 😀
Although it was a bit challenging to figure out the NACAC website using my high school Spanish, here are some highlights of the meet:
Kate Hutchinson, my teammate at USC, took third in the discus with a 155-6. I’m sure Kate will have a lot to tell when she returns home, and we’re going to try to get an interview with her. 😀
USC’s Lionel Larry took second place in the men’s 400m, with a time of 45.38. Duane Soloman won the 800 meters! Congrats– that is a great achievement! 😀
Earlier in the weekend, USC’s Carol Rodriguez took third place in the 100m.
These international meets are a great way for young athletes to gain experience. Sometimes, it’s tempting to compete in the meets you know you can win. But it’s really important to get the experience of competing away from home against strong competition. When I was a senior in high school, I chose to compete at the USATF Senior Nationals, although my chances of doing well at Junior Nationals were obviously much better. After that experience, going to the NCAAs my freshman year in high school wasn’t scary at all. 😀
