Today, I learned some sad news . I found out this morning from Polevault Power that Trackshark – a web site that has had a dominating presence in covering collegiate track and field for the past seven years – will no longer be online.
I first got in contact with Tom Borish back when I was competing in track at the University of Florida in 2003. Tom first sent me an email to see if I could get him in contact with one of my fellow teammates about doing an interview with him for Trackshark. While I was at Florida, I did an email newsletter called “K-mail” that discussed what it was like to be an athlete on the track and field team, what our competitions were like, and posting pictures each week. A few weeks later when I got a PR in the shot put, Tom asked me if I would like to do an interview.
Trackshark made such an huge impact on the collegiate athletes that everyone talked about how it was “THE track site to be seen on” and go to for the latest information and results. I remember both at Florida and USC that my teammates and I would get really excited to see a mention of our team or pictures of us on the site because it was that influential.
Trackshark was an absolutely amazing resource for athletes, coaches, and track and field fans. Tom always had up-to-date information online (rankings, statistics, stories) as well as some very insightful interviews and podcasts with athletes and coaches. What was also great too is that Tom allowed Trackshark to be a place where athletes could blog and write journals about their experiences in track and what it was like competing at the collegiate level. I got the wonderful opportunity to participate and write a journal for Trackshark during the 2004 track and field season.
Track and field has indeed lost a very valuable medium, and Trackshark will truly be missed by all. Tom – I wish you all the best and thank you again for all of your hard work, dedication, and making a significant impat in the lives of track and field athletes. Your contribution and creation of Trackshark truly made track and field a better sport, and we all really appreciate everything that you have done. 🙂
Best Wishes,
Karen
