There is nothing more personal and special than to make something for someone you care about.  Whether it is a favorite meal or treat of their choice – cooking is a way to show someone how much you care about them.  Both of my parents really brought my sisters and I up with the love of cooking and sharing with people.

I remember baking my first cookies with Mom when I was about 10 years old (they turned out to be “rock cookies”  – but with practice and dedication, it all came together.)  Dad also taught me how to make a proper steak (a daily item on my menu as a thrower in high school and college), and has recently taught me how to make numerous yummy recipes, such as baklava, chicken tetrazinni, apple pie, and many more!

Today, I took my cooking skills to the task to make a special treat for Kristin – sugar cookies.  These are definitely a Freberg family tradition during Christmas times – I remember Mom baking away during the holidays making mushroom cookies, lemon squares, Russian teacakes, and sugar cookies.  Kristin and I always baked cookies together growing up, but sugar cookies were always special.  We would make the cookies and make fabulously colorful frosting to put on them.  Sugar cookies have fond memories for me of my childhood with my family.  Plus, they also remind me of the care packages that I would send to Kristin both while she was stationed in Washington and Hawaii – but also this past year in Iraq.

Tomorrow, Kristin will be home – and the Freberg family will be spending Christmas all together for the first time in three years. I am really looking forward to it – it is really going to be special. 🙂

Welcome home, Kristin! 🙂

Hope you all are having a great day.

Best Wishes,

Karen
