It is amazing that it has been nearly three years since I have been out of track and field, and almost eight years out of high school competition. Right now, there are a lot of big track and field meets happening right now. The 2009 NCAA Indoor track and field championships are being held this weekend in College Station, Texas, and the National Scholastic Indoor Track and Field Championships (NSIC) are being held in New York.
Growing up in California, we never really had indoor track because we were able to compete and train outdoors all year round! But when it came closer to finishing high school, I knew that I had to get used to throwing the indoor shot and competing indoors. The indoor shot has a plastic shell outside instead of being made purely out of iron or stainless steel (like the outdoor shot is). It weighs exactly the same (about 8.8 lbs for women and 12 lbs for high school boys and 16 lbs for the college men). The two indoor meets that I competed in high school were the 2000 NSIC and the 2001 NSIC. I won both years – the first year I won at about 46 -47 feet, and my senior year I won with a mark of 52″4.5″ and got the meet record.
I absolutely loved competiting at NSIC. The meet organizers were very supportive and friendly and made me feel very welcomed. The New York Armory and its facilities were state of the art and the competition was very good. It was a wonderful experience for me, and I still look back these last seven years with fond memories of it. One of the memories I have about the NSIC meet was at both occasions, FoxSports was covering the event – and the first meet I was all prepared to be interviewed and practiced ahead of time with what I was going to say (started practice PR at an early age!). Well, they interviewed Dad instead (my dad was my coach in high school) and I was like – hey now! 🙂 The second year I was all prepared for it and Fox Sports was filming Dad coaching throughout the competition – it’s all good! 🙂
I wish all of the high school and college athletes competing at their respective meets this weekend all the very best – run fast, jump high, and throw far! 🙂 Have a wonderful day! 🙂
Best Wishes,
Karen
