Blog Post: Looking at Beijing through an American/Public Relations Professional’s eyes!
I have this great opportunity to visit and tour, while experiencing what it is like to be an American in Beijing. Not only being an American, but also working as a public relations professional, the experience has been very educational, and there are many things that I have observed so far and will observe on my trip that make the future exciting. Just like the Olympic Stadium, Beijing is a wonderful gift to the world.
Since I have been in Beijing for a couple days now, here are some things that I have noticed about the city. First, the city is neat, tidy and orderly and everything is in its place. The people are friendly and helpful. The streets are well maintained, professional and it is certainly one of the great cultural landmarks of the world. One thing that is hard not to notice is that construction is everywhere around the city due to the growing businesses as well as preparing for the Beijing Olympics.
Achievement is in the air.
What’s funny is that I feel we have also been taking a beautiful culinary tour through China—the food here has been absolutely amazing and delicious. We haven’t had Peking duck yet, but we found out a restaurant from our guide that we will make sure to check out.
Another thing that I noticed is that traffic laws and rules are what we consider to be “guidelines.” People make lanes when they aren’t there, and you have to run for your life when you are walking around! Kristin and I discovered this when we were walking to the Forbidden City and we had to run at warp speed to get across the street and not get run over! But it is all good—we are still alive and kicking!
I have been very impressed with the service that visitors receive here in China. China has been a great example of good consumer public relations and reputation management. Everyone from the hotel to our guides are very professional and accommodating. It has been a great and memorable trip so far, and I am very happy to be here with Kristin and be part of this wonderful conference. J
I hope I can spend some time with a Chinese family here in Beijing, then my time will have been perfect.
